Neurology is the discipline that studies diseases of the nervous system. Diseases of the nervous system are very common in dogs and cats. They can affect the brain, the spinal cord, the nerves or the muscles.

The main reasons for consultation in neurology are: epileptic seizures, changes in behaviour, muscle tremors, abnormal gait or even paralysis. Neurology is also the place where examinations for congenital deafness in dogs and cats are performed.

The clinical neurological examination often allows the problem to be located. Afterwards, additional examinations are usually necessary to clarify the diagnosis. Some examinations are performed under general anaesthesia (electrophysiological examination, cerebrospinal fluid puncture, CT scan, MRI).

Some spinal conditions (e.g. herniated discs) may require surgical treatment. In these cases, the patient is transferred to the orthopaedic surgery department.
