Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine, either continuously or intermittently. This situation is problematic for both patients and their owners, and can sometimes lead to euthanasia if no solution is found.
There are many causes of incontinence (anatomical malformation, functional anomaly), such as the presence of an ectopic ureter in a puppy or urethral sphincter incompetence in a spayed bitch. We also treat cases of urinary retention that are not due to obstruction, such as vesico-urethral dyssynergia.
The aim of the consultation is to identify the cause(s) of your pet's urinary incontinence, and to suggest the most appropriate treatment. This may be medical or surgical. Our diagnostic and treatment techniques are constantly evolving, thanks in particular to clinical research.
We also provide follow-up care for your pet, as some causes of urinary incontinence require adaptation of the treatment before it is optimal.
Our team is made up of a veterinary specialist with recognized expertise in the field of urinary incontinence, Dr Noël, as well as residents and interns. Diagnostic methods
The investigation of urinary continence disorders requires medical imaging examinations (radiography, ultrasound, scanner, MRI, endoscopy). In the event of functional impairment, urethral and bladder pressure measurements are also carried out (urodynamic examinations).
Treatment options
We will suggest the most appropriate medical or surgical treatment for your pet. We have all the necessary equipment at our disposal, such as artificial sphincters to treat urinary incontinence refractory to conventional treatments.
Consultations
In order to best prepare for your pet's visit, we advise you to make an appointment with your veterinarian ten days before our consultation, in order to carry out a urinary analysis and culture. Medical imaging examinations with contrast and urodynamic tests cannot be carried out if your pet has a urinary tract infection. Your pet must also have been fasting (water allowed) since the evening before, as some examinations require a light anaesthetic.
As we want to be able to give you a diagnosis at the end of the consultation, we suggest that you carry out all the additional tests on the day of the consultation. As a result, the consultation will last several hours, as it will require a number of complementary examinations.
