Variability of the urinary microbiota in incontinent dogs

Clinical research on urinary microbiota variability in incontinent bitches

2019-04-24 cvu nouvelle clinique 059

What's the problem?

Like women, dogs can suffer from urinary incontinence. Many factors have been studied to determine the causes of incontinence. Recently, microbial RNA sequencing techniques have shown that urine is not sterile, and that its bacterial composition varies with pathologies of the urogenital tract. In women suffering from urinary incontinence, the composition of the microbiota varies according to the pathology and the severity of symptoms, and influences the response to treatment.

The aim of this clinical research is to determine whether the urinary microbiota of incontinent dogs displays the same characteristics as that of women.

Who will be studied?

Incontinent bitches with congenital or acquired urethral sphincter incompetence or bladder instability.

Healthy adult bitches for the control group.

Study

Urinary microbiota in the incontinent bitch: description of the urinary microbiota of 3 common pathologies and evaluation of their changes in response to medical treatment.

This research was approved by the ULiège ethics committee.

The blood test, conventional urinary analysis and culture, and microbiota analysis will be offered to the owners.
