Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology is the branch of internal medicine that studies diseases of the digestive tract (mouth - esophagus - stomach - intestines - pancreas - anus). Symptoms of digestive tract disease are varied and include vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, swallowing problems and constipation.
The most common diseases in dogs and cats are obstructions caused by foreign bodies (bones, stones, socks, etc.), inflammation of the stomach or intestine due to food allergy, cancer, perianal fistulas, etc
Depending on the symptoms and the results of the clinical examination, various complementary tests may be suggested (blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound). In some cases, endoscopy under general anaesthetic may be required for diagnosis or treatment (e.g., removal of a foreign body).
