Neurology is the discipline that studies diseases of the nervous system. Affections of the nervous system are very common in dogs and cats. They can affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves or muscles.

The main reasons for consulting a neurologist are epileptic seizures, behavioral changes, muscle tremors, abnormal gait or even paralysis. The neurology department also performs examinations to detect congenital deafness in dogs and cats.

A clinical neurological examination often helps to localize the problem. Complementary examinations are then usually required to clarify the diagnosis. Some examinations are carried out under general anaesthetic (electrophysiological examination, cerebrospinal fluid puncture, scanner, MRI).

Certain conditions of the spinal column (such as a herniated disc) sometimes require surgical treatment. In such cases, the patient is transferred to the orthopedic surgery department. Some neurological disorders may also be due to anatomical malformation (e.g. hydrocephalus) or the presence of a tumor (e.g. intracranial meningioma in cats). These patients are treated in collaboration with the Surgery and Oncology departments.
