Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in West Highland white terriers

 

Objectives of the study

To better characterise idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in the Westie in order to identify its causes and risk factors, improve its diagnosis, understanding, prognosis and treatment.

 

Inclusion criteria

  • Healthy dogs:

Westie from 6 years of age: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis detection programme.

  • Sick dogs:

Westie with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: diagnostic and follow-up programme.
 

Description of the protocol

The following examinations are performed at each visit as part of the screening, diagnosis and follow-up programme for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis :

  • Clinical examination
  • Complete blood work-up and arterial blood gases
  • Walking test
  • Echocardiography
  • Chest CT scan
  • Endoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage

Duration of participation: Not defined

End date of the study: Not defined. Study validated by the Ethics Committee of the University of Liege: project n°2245.

 

Implications for the owner

Sick Westies :

Control visit every 6 months.

Healthy Westies :

Screening every year from 6 years old

This research project was jointly initiated a few years ago by Professor Clercx from the University of Liège and Professor Rajamäki from the University of Helsinki.
